Transforming a basic townhouse backyard into an Oasis

We get to see a lot of houses and, a lot of cool things that people do to make their house their home. This was a great one today. A townhouse on Alpine near 6th St. the photo doesn’t really do it justice. They created a grotto in the backyard. They dug out a 12 x 12 foot section off the backside of the house, terraced the walls with stone and built a natural pool in there. They also opened up the basement wall by installing French doors from the downstairs bedroom to the outside/pool area.

This really transforms the house. The backyard is very private and a now it’s a real oasis. The basement level, which was below grade level, is now bright and sunny and opens to this fantastic backyard. It’s a very Mediterranean feel with the terraced effect, tile floors, bright spaces and clever use of a small space.
